Suicide and Learning Disability

Inclusion North is working with Kingston University London on a research project about suicide and people with a learning disability.

There is not much research about the experiences of people with a learning disability and suicide. This project will help us understand more about what people think and feel.

We will have 3 meetings with people with lived experience.

We will talk about:

  • Thoughts and feelings about suicide
  • What words people feel comfortable using
  • How we can talk about suicide in a positive, comfortable and safe way
  • What is important to people with a learning disability
  • How people with lived experience can help shape the research

We want everyone to feel safe, listened to and respected.

We will use Easy Read and accessible information to help people understand the project and share their views.

The things people tell us will help design the research and make sure the voices of people with a learning disability are included.

Suicide and Learning Disability

Inclusion North is working with Kingston University London on a research project exploring the experiences of people with a learning disability in relation to suicide.

There is currently limited research that centres the voices, experiences and perspectives of people with a learning disability. This project provides an opportunity to address this gap and ensure that people with lived experience are meaningfully involved in shaping the research.

Our role

Inclusion North will support three co-design meetings with people with lived experience.

The meetings will explore:

  • People’s thoughts and feelings about suicide.
  • What language and words people feel are appropriate and respectful.
  • How suicide can be discussed in a way that is positive, comfortable and safe.
  • What researchers need to consider when carrying out this work.
  • How lived experience can influence and strengthen the research.

We will use accessible and Easy Read information to support people to understand the project and contribute fully.

This is a sensitive area of research, so we will take a careful, person-centred approach, with appropriate support and safeguards throughout the process.

Why this matters

People with a learning disability should be able to influence research about issues that affect their lives.

By involving people with lived experience directly in the development of the research, we can help ensure that the work is relevant, accessible and informed by people’s real experiences.
