Diane’s Story: Making a Difference Through Leadership

For Learning Disability Week, we are celebrating the achievements of people with a learning disability and the difference they make in organisations, communities and wider society.

Diane is a Co-Chair of the Board of Directors at Inclusion North. Through her role, she helps make sure that the voices of people with a learning disability are heard and included in important decisions.

When asked what she has enjoyed most about being a Director, Diane said:

“I have enjoyed the challenge. I have learned new things and been able to give good ideas to Inclusion North.”

Over the years, Diane has helped shape discussions and contribute ideas that have made a difference to the organisation.

One example is Inclusion North’s Star of the Season award.

“Star of the Season was my idea. It has made a real difference and I feel proud to have been part of making that happen for staff.”

Diane believes it is important that people with a learning disability are involved in leadership roles and have opportunities to share their experiences and ideas.

Having Directors with lived experience helps Inclusion North stay connected to the people it exists to support.

She also spoke warmly about the support she has received from fellow Co-Chair Derek.

“Derek has been lovely and very supportive. He emails me to ask if I am okay and checks up on me.”

When thinking about her favourite memories with Inclusion North, Diane highlighted the Inclusion North Awards as a particular highlight.
“The Awards event was really good and it all started from my idea!”

She also reflected on completing Take the Lead Levels 1, 2 and 3, which helped her learn new skills and gain new experiences.
