My first job was supporting a student with muscular dystrophy at Coventry University. I kind of fell into it because I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do, but it made me realised that connecting with people and supporting them to achieve their goals was something I truly enjoyed.
Since then, with a small stint as a backstage tour guide at the National Theatre, I've worked for various charities supporting people. For the last ten years though I've worked for National Mencap working on lots of different projects with families.
I've done quite a lot of work with families from black and ethnic minority communities, some work around how family carers can be involved in recruiting, training and supervising support staff, work with carers with learning disabilities, with adult siblings of people with learning disabilities and with parents with a learning disability.
I've loved it all, and worked with some amazing families, and feel really lucky to now have the chance to work with Inclusion North. Amongst other things I'll be supporting the CQC 'Experts by Experience' in the Yorkshire and Humber region do the hugely important task of checking that people are listened too, that they are supported well, and that their needs are put at the centre.
