I have worked with people with a learning disability for the last 7 years. For several years I was a support worker supporting a group of young women in a supported living service in Buckinghamshire. I really enjoyed supporting people and I was able to do this in my next job working at Mencaps national centre in London. I worked with staff members with a learning disability supporting them in their roles in the Campaigns and Policy teams.
During this time I also supported international self-advocate representatives in their roles on the European Platform for Self-Advocates and the Inclusion International Council. I travelled with them to many international meetings and conferences and I was lucky enough to meet lots of self-advocates from all around the world. I found out lots of information about what is going on for people with a learning disability in different countries.
Some of my roles have been funded through Access to Work and I was able to give evidence to the Work and Pensions select committee on how to improve Access to Work services for people with a learning disability. I know for lots of self-advocates employment is a very important issue so I was pleased to be able to talk with decision makers about this.
More recently I have worked as an Inclusion Coordinator in Governance working on how to support better inclusion at Mencap.
I am really looking forward to working at Inclusion North especially supporting the work on Care and Treatment Reviews with Experts by Experience. It is very important to me to make sure that people are being included, listened to and supported in the right way. I am pleased that I am part of an organisation who believes in these values.
